In a dominant display of cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin’s exceptional all-round performance led India to a commanding 280-run victory against Bangladesh in the first Test. Ashwin’s century with the bat, followed by a six-wicket haul, was instrumental in securing the win.

Ashwin Shines as India Secures Big Win

Ashwin’s remarkable contributions with both bat and ball highlighted India’s win. His 113-run knock in the first innings helped India post 376 after a challenging start. Bangladesh, chasing a daunting target of 515, were bowled out for 234 in their second innings on day four, with Ashwin once again shining by claiming six wickets. This victory also extended India’s unbeaten Test record against Bangladesh to 14 matches.

Pant and Gill Star in Second Innings

Rishabh Pant, playing his first Test since recovering from a serious car accident, marked his return in style with a century, adding 109 runs. Shubman Gill also starred with an unbeaten 119, as the duo’s 167-run partnership for the fourth wicket allowed India to declare their second innings at 287-4. Pant’s emotional celebration was a testament to his inspiring comeback, while Gill’s steady knock provided solidity to India’s total.

Ashwin’s Bowling Masterclass

Bangladesh’s overnight resistance was broken early on day four when Ashwin dismissed Shakib Al Hasan, who was caught for 25. Ashwin’s brilliant bowling continued as he picked up his 37th five-wicket haul, equalling the legendary Shane Warne. Ravindra Jadeja also played a vital role, taking three wickets, including the crucial scalp of Najmul Hossain Shanto, who top-scored with 82 for Bangladesh.

Jadeja and Ashwin’s Key Partnership

Earlier in the match, Ashwin and Jadeja’s 199-run stand for the seventh wicket rescued India from a precarious position of 144-6, propelling them to a strong total. Jadeja’s contribution with the ball complemented Ashwin’s heroics, making the pair India’s key match-winners.

Skipper Rohit Sharma’s Praise

India’s captain Rohit Sharma lauded Ashwin’s impact, calling him a player who always delivers when the team needs him most. “He’s always there for us over the years,” Rohit said, emphasizing the importance of Ashwin’s consistent contributions to the team.

Bangladesh’s Efforts Fall Short

Despite a strong start in the match by their bowlers, including stellar performances by Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh struggled to match India’s all-round strength. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged his team’s shortcomings but found solace in their initial bowling effort.

The victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, with the teams heading to Kanpur for the second Test. India, currently topping the World Test Championship rankings, look to build on their strong start to the new Test season, which includes 10 matches.
